Former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly has stepped into his first official coaching role, taking charge as the head coach of the Pretoria Capitals in South Africa’s SA20 league. The franchise confirmed the news, stating that the 53-year-old replaces ex-England batter Jonathan Trott, while South Africa’s legendary all-rounder Shaun Pollock joins as assistant coach.
Announcing the development on social media, the Capitals remarked that their new coach, fondly known as The Prince of Kolkata, would bring a “royal touch” to the team’s dugout.
Ganguly, who ended his international playing career in 2008, has since worn several hats in cricket. Apart from serving as president of the BCCI from 2019 to 2022, he also spent time in the Indian Premier League as a mentor with Delhi Capitals.
Notably, while Indian cricketers under contract are barred from signing up for foreign franchise leagues to safeguard the primacy of the IPL, administrators and retired greats like Ganguly continue to find opportunities on the global stage.
