Amid renewed attention on the “Epstein Files,” Bill Gates has publicly responded to questions about his past association with Jeffrey Epstein. During a town hall meeting with staff, Gates acknowledged his interactions and expressed regret over the controversy.
Admits Association but Denies Wrongdoing
Gates admitted that he had professional meetings with Epstein beginning in 2014. Notably, this was three years after Epstein’s 2011 conviction related to sexual abuse of a minor.
However, Gates firmly denied participating in any illegal activities or being involved in Epstein’s crimes. He stated that while he met Epstein on multiple occasions, he was not aware of the full extent of his background at the time.
Apology to Foundation Staff
Gates issued a formal apology to employees of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. He acknowledged that his decision to meet Epstein was a mistake and expressed regret that the association brought negative attention to the foundation and its staff.
He emphasised that the controversy should not overshadow the foundation’s global philanthropic work.
Personal Life and Public Scrutiny
During the internal discussion, Gates also acknowledged having relationships with two Russian women. However, he clarified that these relationships were consensual and did not involve any illegal conduct.
Reports indicate that his former wife, Melinda French Gates, had expressed concerns about Epstein early on. Despite her reservations, Gates continued to have limited professional interactions for a period.
Clarification on Meetings and Photos
Gates stated that after certain meetings, Epstein’s associates took photographs with him. Nevertheless, he maintained that he did not maintain contact with those individuals beyond the meetings.
Meanwhile, the United States Department of Justice has reportedly released approximately three million pages of documents related to the Epstein investigation. The disclosures have intensified public scrutiny of individuals connected to the case.
