ROME — A two-member Indian Coast Guard (ICG) delegation, led by Director General Paramesh Sivamani, is attending the 4th Coast Guard Global Summit (CGGS) in Rome, Italy, from September 11-12, 2025, alongside representatives from 115 countries and international organisations.
The summit, co-chaired by Italy and Japan, fosters collaboration among global Coast Guards, focusing on maritime safety, marine environment protection, and security. Discussions focused on emergency responses to pollution incidents, natural disasters, and maritime accidents, as well as countering transnational crimes through advanced technology, training, and international cooperation under the theme ‘Guardians at Sea’.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, via virtual address, delivered opening remarks, stressing the importance of global Coast Guard collaboration in marine pollution response, search and rescue, and law enforcement.
The ICG delegation contributed significantly, with Sivamani delivering an expert lecture titled ‘Guardians Against the Blaze: ICG’s Tactical Response to Fire Emergencies’, showcasing India’s expertise in maritime safety and security.
Initiated by the Japan Coast Guard and the Nippon Foundation in 2017, the CGGS has become a vital platform for dialogue and capacity building. This year’s summit aims to strengthen multilateral cooperation and develop strategies to protect the global ocean environment.
Looking ahead, the ICG plans to bid for the presidency of the 5th CGGS, set to be hosted in India in 2027, signaling India’s commitment to advancing global maritime governance and safer seas.
