The Telangana School Education Department has taken a crucial decision on government schools with no students. The department will temporarily close all ‘zero-enrolment’ schools across the state from the current academic year.
Telangana Tops in Zero-Student Schools
According to 2024–25 academic year data, Telangana has the highest number of government schools without students. The state has 2,245 such schools where not a single child has enrolled.
Officials said this situation prompted the department to take corrective steps.
1,441 Schools to Shut Temporarily
Out of over 2,000 schools under the department, 1,441 schools have neither students nor sanctioned teacher posts. The department has decided to temporarily close these schools.
From this academic year, authorities will also remove these schools from district-level education statistics.
Decision Pending on 600 More Schools
Around 600 schools currently have no students but still have teacher posts. The department will take a separate decision on these institutions after further review.
Officials clarified that these schools remain non-functional at present.
Schools Can Reopen on Public Demand
The education department stressed that the closures are not permanent. Officials said they will reopen schools if parents request admissions in those areas.
They also promised to appoint teachers wherever required.
200 New Schools Opened in Remote Areas
Officials highlighted that the government opened nearly 200 new schools this year. Authorities set them up in remote tribal hamlets and interior villages based on parental demand.
The department said it will continue to balance accessibility with efficient school management across Telangana.
