Former Union Minister and senior Congress leader Shivraj Patil passed away at the age of 90 on Monday. He breathed his last at his residence in Latur, Maharashtra, after battling age-related health issues. His demise marks the end of a long and influential political journey that spanned over five decades.
A Distinguished Political Career
Born in 1935, Shivraj Patil began his political career as the Chief of a Municipal Council, laying the foundation for what would soon become an exceptional public life. He won the trust of the people of Latur time and again, securing seven Lok Sabha victories from the constituency. Additionally, he served two terms as an MLA, further strengthening his bond with the region.
Patil’s journey in national politics was equally remarkable. He held several key positions across different administrations:
- 10th Speaker of the Lok Sabha (1991–1996)
- Union Home Minister (2004–2008)
- Punjab Governor
- Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh
- Minister in the cabinets of Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, and Manmohan Singh, handling crucial portfolios including Defence and Science & Technology
His long years in public service earned him immense respect across party lines. Colleagues and leaders often praised his calm demeanor, administrative clarity, and unwavering commitment to democratic values.
Nation Mourns the Loss
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over Patil’s demise. In a message posted on X, he wrote, “Shivraj Patil ji’s demise is saddening. He was an experienced leader who served as MLA, MP and Union Minister for many years. His commitment to public welfare was always notable. He had visited my residence a few months ago. It is painful to hear of his passing. Om Shanti.”
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also offered her condolences. She described the former minister as a dedicated public servant who upheld the Congress ideology with dignity and discipline.
The Congress party, already grappling with several internal challenges, plunged into grief as news of his death reached its leaders and supporters. Senior leaders recalled his contributions to parliamentary functioning, national security, and administrative reforms.
