Recent cases from Chennai and Odisha have revealed horrific abuse involving family members and educational institutions. These incidents highlight the vulnerability of children and the urgent need for vigilance and justice.
Betrayal of Maternal Bond in Chennai
In Chennai, a mother prioritised her extramarital affair over her daughter’s safety. She reportedly gave her daughter sleeping pills to prevent her from interfering, allowing her 50-year-old boyfriend, Dakshinamurthy, to assault the girl.
The abuse was repeated multiple times. During the second assault, when the girl regained consciousness and screamed, her mother locked her in a room to stop her from escaping. Eventually, the girl fled to relatives in Tiruvannamalai. Doctors confirmed she became pregnant due to the assaults.
Police registered a case and transferred it to the Seyaru Women’s Police Station since the crime occurred in Vadapalani. Investigations are ongoing, and authorities are working to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Corruption of Educational Authority in Odisha
In Odisha, a school that should have been a safe environment turned into a site of repeated abuse. A 12-year-old girl in Kendrapara district was raped multiple times by four teachers and a school peon.
Her mother discovered the abuse when she found her daughter crying alone at home. Acting immediately, she reported the incident to the police. Officers arrested all five accused and initiated a case under the POCSO Act, ensuring strict legal action.
How These Crimes Came to Light
Both cases show that abuse often remains hidden until family members intervene or victims escape.
In Chennai, the victim had to flee and seek medical help through relatives to expose the crimes.
In Odisha, the mother’s direct questioning of her daughter uncovered the school-based abuse.
These tragedies emphasise the importance of family vigilance and institutional accountability. Furthermore, they highlight the need for robust child protection measures at home and in schools. Families, educators, and authorities must work together to prevent such abuses in the future.
