A sudden cholera outbreak has alarmed residents of Srikakulam. In the past 24 hours, 19 people fell severely ill with dehydration, vomiting, and diarrhoea. Doctors rushed them to hospitals for emergency care. Consequently, authorities are taking immediate action to contain the outbreak.
Heavily Affected Areas
The outbreak mainly affects Kaki Street, Dammala Street, Gudi Street, and Manguvari Thota, which are densely populated. As a result, the number of patients rose quickly. Meanwhile, health workers are providing urgent treatment at RIMS and other local hospitals. Residents are also advised to drink only safe water and maintain personal hygiene.
District Collector Takes Action
Noticing the seriousness of the situation, District Collector Swapnal Dinakar visited the affected areas personally. He checked on patients and inspected local sanitation and water systems. He believes that contaminated water and poor hygiene caused the outbreak. Therefore, he instructed municipal and health officials to ensure every household gets safe drinking water. He also ordered officials to maintain drains and sewage systems carefully.
Water Testing and Government Measures
Health officials collected water samples from several locations and sent them to laboratories for testing. In addition, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu held a review meeting with district officials. They discovered that recent road repairs might have disrupted water lines and caused contamination. Hence, authorities are closely monitoring the situation to prevent further cases.
Public Advisory
Officials advise residents to drink only safe water, maintain hygiene, and report symptoms immediately. Emergency health camps are active to treat affected families. Furthermore, villagers and city residents should avoid using untreated water for drinking or cooking until the outbreak ends.
The incident highlights the urgent need for safe water and hygiene awareness in city neighbourhoods.
