The Odisha mining officer bribery case has stunned the state after vigilance officials caught Debabrata Mohanty accepting a ₹30,000 bribe. Subsequent raids uncovered over ₹4 crore in cash from his residence and office, marking one of the largest recoveries in the state’s anti-corruption history.
Officer Caught Red-Handed Taking a Bribe
The accused, Debabrata Mohanty, was serving as a senior official in the state’s mining department. According to officials, he demanded ₹30,000 from a licensed coal trader in exchange for official favours.
Acting on a complaint, the Odisha Vigilance launched a special operation and caught Mohanty red-handed while accepting the bribe. Officers immediately took him into custody and initiated further searches.
₹4 Crore Recovered in Disproportionate Assets Raid
Following the arrest, vigilance teams conducted simultaneous raids at Mohanty’s flat, office, and other linked locations. During the searches, officials discovered trolley bags, cupboards, and rooms stuffed with large bundles of cash.
Authorities confirmed that they seized more than ₹4 crore in cash during the operation. Officials described it as one of the highest cash recoveries in the history of Odisha Vigilance.
Investigators are now examining how the officer accumulated such a massive amount of money. They are also verifying whether he holds additional properties or investments under family members’ names.
Investigation Expands Across Financial Records
The vigilance department has begun scrutinising Mohanty’s bank accounts, property documents, and financial transactions. Officials are also checking investments allegedly made in the names of his relatives.
Meanwhile, the case has triggered statewide and national debate about rising corruption in government departments. Authorities have assured that the probe will continue and that strict legal action will follow based on the findings.
