At least 20 workers were burnt alive, and 14 others were injured in a massive firecracker factory blast at Vetlapalem in Kakinada district, leaving Andhra Pradesh in deep shock. Nine of the injured are in critical condition, and two are fighting for their lives at the Government General Hospital in Kakinada. Most of the victims were poor daily wage workers who had gone to work hoping to earn a few hundred rupees. Within minutes, their routine day turned into a nightmare.
Tragedy at Vetlapalem
The explosion tore through the firecracker unit with huge force. Thick smoke filled the area. Nearby workers ran for safety. However, many could not escape in time. The blast caused severe burns and heavy damage. Residents rushed to help before emergency teams arrived.
Soon after, ambulances shifted the injured to the hospital. Doctors said nine victims are still in serious condition. Two among them remain extremely critical and are under close watch. Medical teams are working around the clock to save them.
CM Chandrababu Visits Victims
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu visited the accident site and later met the injured at the hospital. He directed doctors to give the best treatment without delay. He also assured families that the government would fully support them.
Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan joined him in consoling the victims’ families. The government announced ₹20 lakh compensation for each deceased worker’s family. The Chief Minister also promised to educate the children of the victims.
Officials Suspended, Strict Action Promised
Holding officials responsible for safety lapses, the Chief Minister suspended the local Fire Officer, RDO, DSP, and Labour Officer. He said the accident happened because proper safety steps were not followed. He warned that those behind the negligence would face strict punishment, including property seizure and life imprisonment.
Poor Families Among the Worst Hit
The Chief Minister noted that 12 of the deceased belonged to the Scheduled Castes and nine were women. All of them were from poor families. They depended on daily wages for survival. Their sudden loss has left many families without support.
He said such painful incidents should never happen again. He made it clear that anyone risking innocent lives for profit will not be spared.
Stronger Safety Measures Ahead
The government will now collect full details of all firecracker units in the state. The Chief Minister admitted that the current rules are not enough. He announced that CCTV cameras will be made compulsory in every unit. These cameras will connect to control rooms for better monitoring.
He also said the license process will become stricter. Regular inspections will follow. Public safety, he stressed, is the top priority. Finally, he prayed for peace for the departed souls and promised firm action to prevent such tragedies in the future.
