Assam Police arrested a retired Indian Air Force officer on suspicion of sharing sensitive information with a Pakistan-based intelligence agency. The accused, Kulendra Sharma, was taken into custody from the Patia area of Tezpur on Friday night.
Police officials said they had monitored Sharma for several weeks. Investigators suspected his links with a Pakistan espionage network. After completing a preliminary inquiry, officers moved quickly and arrested him.
During the operation, police seized Sharma’s mobile phone and laptop. Investigators found suspicious digital material on the devices. They also suspect that Sharma deleted some crucial data before the seizure. Forensic experts are now working to recover the erased information.
Sonitpur Deputy Superintendent of Police Haricharan Bhumij stated that the investigation is ongoing. He added that authorities will confirm the facts only after a detailed probe. Police are currently examining Sharma’s communication records and financial transactions.
Sharma retired from the Indian Air Force in 2002. During his service, he worked as a Junior Warrant Officer at the Tezpur Air Force Station. The base hosts key defence assets, including a Sukhoi-30 fighter aircraft squadron. After retirement, Sharma also worked briefly at Tezpur University.
Police have registered a case under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code related to national security. Officials will produce Sharma before a local court on Saturday.
