England finally ended a 15-year wait for a Test victory on Australian soil with a memorable win at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The visitors defeated Australia by four wickets in the fourth Ashes Test, bringing relief after losing the first three matches of the series.
Notably, the Boxing Day Test concluded in just two days, as the pitch offered plenty of assistance to fast bowlers.
England Bowlers Set the Tone Early
After winning the toss, England opted to bowl first and made an immediate impact. Josh Tongue delivered a sensational spell, picking up five wickets, as Australia collapsed for 152 runs in the first innings.
However, Australia struck back strongly with the ball. Michael Neser and Scott Boland rattled England’s batting lineup, dismissing them for 110 runs. As a result, Australia gained a 42-run first-innings lead.
Pace Attack Dominates Second Innings
On the second day, England’s bowlers once again dominated proceedings. Brydon Carse impressed with figures of 4/34, while skipper Ben Stokes supported well with 3/24.
Due to the relentless pressure, Australia managed only 132 runs in their second innings. Consequently, England received a manageable target of 175 runs to win the match.
Batters Seal Historic Victory
England’s openers provided a strong start to the chase. Ben Duckett (34) and Zak Crawley (37) played aggressively and eased early nerves. Although England lost a few wickets in the middle order, Jacob Bethell (40) showed composure and guided the team to victory.
With this result, England secured their first Test win in Australia in nearly 15 years. The victory also marked Joe Root’s first Test win in Australia after 18 matches and Ben Stokes’ first after 13 Tests.
Series Status and Final Test
Australia had already sealed the Ashes series with a 3-0 lead. However, this win offered England much-needed confidence. The fifth and final Test will begin on January 4 in Sydney.
