Sri Lankan Member of Parliament Namal Rajapaksa has offered pointed advice to Tamil actor Vijay, stating that politics is very different from cinema and demands serious commitment. While praising Vijay as an actor, Rajapaksa said the real test for him now lies in fulfilling promises made to the people.
“Take Politics Seriously,” Says Rajapaksa
Rajapaksa noted that Vijay’s entry into politics has generated interest beyond India. However, he stressed that public credibility depends entirely on performance. “Politics is a full-fledged responsibility. People have expectations, and leaders must meet them,” he said.
Moreover, Rajapaksa advised Vijay to understand his constituency deeply and make only those promises that he can realistically deliver. He warned that unlike films, real-life politics offers no second takes and that leaders face a reality check very quickly.
Cinema and Governance Are Not the Same
Drawing a clear distinction, Rajapaksa said ruling a state like Tamil Nadu requires focus, administrative understanding, and long-term vision. Therefore, he suggested that Vijay must put aside the mindset of cinema and concentrate fully on governance if he wishes to succeed politically.
Katchatheevu Issue a Bilateral Matter
Responding to Vijay’s remarks on the Katchatheevu issue, Rajapaksa clarified that the matter involves an agreement between India and Sri Lanka. He added that decisions related to Katchatheevu fall under the Central government’s jurisdiction, not state governments.
Additionally, Rajapaksa said the fishermen issue largely arises when Indian fishermen cross into Sri Lankan waters and use banned fishing methods, which complicates bilateral relations.
Call to See Sri Lanka as a Partner
Furthermore, Rajapaksa urged Tamil Nadu leaders to move beyond outdated political sensitivities toward Sri Lanka. He highlighted that Sri Lanka has endured civil war, a tsunami, and an economic crisis. Now, he said, it is time for India and Tamil Nadu to view Sri Lanka as a progressive development partner.
