Excitement is building ahead of the official Indian team announcement for the ODI series against New Zealand, which is expected later today. The three-match ODI series will mark India’s first bilateral assignment of 2026, beginning on January 11.
The selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, will name the squad for the series, with Shubman Gill set to return as captain. Gill missed the recent South Africa tour due to a neck injury but has now recovered and is ready to lead the side.
Uncertainty Over Rishabh Pant’s ODI Spot
All eyes are on Rishabh Pant, whose place in the ODI format appears uncertain. While Pant remains a key player in Test cricket, his recent form in limited-overs matches has raised concerns. His performance in the Vijay Hazare Trophy also failed to convince the selectors.
As a result, the selection panel may consider other options. Ishaan Kishan, who has impressed with consistent centuries in domestic cricket, is a strong contender. Dhruv Jurel, known for his steady performances, is also in the race. Meanwhile, K.L. Rahul is expected to continue as the first-choice wicketkeeper.
Team Combination and Bowling Changes Likely
In the bowling department, the selectors are likely to rest Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya. The move is part of workload management ahead of the T20 World Cup in February. This decision opens the door for senior pacer Mohammed Shami, who is expected to make a comeback to the ODI side.
The selectors are also considering Devdutt Padikkal and Sarfaraz Khan, both of whom delivered strong performances in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
ODI Schedule Against New Zealand
The three ODIs against New Zealand will take place at:
Vadodara – January 11
Rajkot – January 14
Indore – January 18
With several selection calls to be made, the squad announcement has generated significant buzz, especially around Pant’s future in ODIs and the team’s balance ahead of a crucial year.
