New Zealand set a daunting target for Team India in the first ODI at Vadodara after posting exactly 300 runs for the loss of eight wickets in their allotted 50 overs. After winning the toss, India opted to bowl first. However, the Kiwi batters responded with a disciplined and aggressive display.
To begin with, New Zealand openers Devon Conway and Henry Nicholls gave their team a solid foundation. They handled the Indian pace attack with confidence and stitched together a crucial 117-run partnership for the first wicket. Conway looked fluent during his stay and scored a well-made 56, while Nicholls complemented him with a steady 62.
Meanwhile, India managed to pull things back after the opening stand. Harshit Rana broke the partnership by dismissing Nicholls, and shortly after, Conway also returned to the pavilion. As a result, the momentum briefly shifted in India’s favour.
However, Daryl Mitchell ensured New Zealand stayed on track for a big total. Coming in at number four, he played with authority and calm. Despite wickets falling at the other end, Mitchell did not feel the pressure. Instead, he attacked the bowlers and scored a fine 84 off just 71 balls, including five fours and three sixes.
Towards the end, Christian Clarke added valuable runs with a quick unbeaten 24 off 17 deliveries. His late flourish helped New Zealand cross the 300-run mark, setting India a challenging target of 301.
On the bowling front, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and Harshit Rana picked up two wickets each for India. Additionally, Kuldeep Yadav chipped in with one wicket. Even so, the Indian bowlers found it tough to contain the New Zealand batters on a good batting surface.
Now, with a stiff chase ahead, all eyes are on India’s batting lineup as they look to respond to New Zealand’s strong total.
