Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif believes that Virat Kohli holds a clear edge over Rohit Sharma in the ODI format. Although both senior batters have retired from T20Is and Tests, they continue to focus only on One Day Internationals. Their main target now is the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Rohit Sharma is known for his explosive batting at the top. In contrast, Virat Kohli stands out for his consistency and match-winning temperament. According to Kaif, this difference gives Kohli a slight advantage in ODIs.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Mohammad Kaif explained that Kohli converts starts into big scores more often. “If Virat reaches 30 or 40, he usually bats till the end and wins the match for the team,” Kaif said. Moreover, he added that Kohli performs consistently once he finds form. Because of this, Kaif feels Kohli always stays one step ahead of Rohit in the 50-over format.
When it comes to numbers, both batters boast impressive ODI records. Rohit Sharma has scored 11,566 runs in 281 matches at an average of 49. He has also smashed 33 centuries and 61 half-centuries. Notably, Rohit remains the only player with three double centuries in ODIs, a rare achievement.
On the other hand, Virat Kohli has delivered even stronger numbers. He has amassed 14,673 runs in 310 ODIs at a remarkable average of 58.45. Additionally, Kohli has registered 53 centuries and 77 half-centuries, underlining his dominance.
While Rohit’s attacking style often gives India fast starts, Kohli’s reliability under pressure makes the difference in tight matches. Therefore, as India prepares for future challenges, both players remain crucial. However, as Kaif suggests, Virat Kohli’s consistency keeps him slightly ahead in ODI cricket.
