Electricity meter readers staged a strong protest in Vijayawada on Tuesday, pressing the government to address long-pending issues related to job security and fair wages. The agitation brought together workers from different areas, all voicing the same concern: uncertainty over their future despite years of service. From the start, the protest reflected growing frustration among meter readers who say their work keeps the power system running but their own livelihoods remain unstable.

Protest Camp Draws Attention

The meter readers set up a dedicated protest camp in Vijayawada and continued their demonstration peacefully. They raised slogans and displayed placards to highlight their demands. Most importantly, they called on the state government to guarantee job security without delay. According to the protesters, temporary arrangements and outsourcing have left many families under constant stress. Therefore, they urged officials to take a clear policy decision.

Demand for Minimum Wages and Salary Protection

Along with job security, the protesters demanded strict implementation of the Minimum Wages Act. They said many meter readers receive irregular and inadequate pay despite heavy workloads. Moreover, they asked the authorities to credit salaries through an escrow account system. This method, they believe, would ensure timely payments and protect workers from sudden disruptions. As a result, families depending on this income could plan their expenses with confidence.

Call for Alternative Employment Within Power Utilities

The meter readers also appealed to the government to provide alternative employment within electricity departments if roles change in the future. They explained that their experience and field knowledge remain valuable to power utilities. Hence, instead of removing workers, the department should absorb them into suitable positions. This step, they argued, would benefit both the workers and the system.

Political Support Strengthens the Protest

Former Member of Parliament Vadde Sobhanadheeswara Rao visited the protest site and extended his support to the meter readers’ union. He listened to their concerns and spoke in favor of resolving the issue at the earliest. Furthermore, he urged the government to hold discussions with union leaders and find a practical solution. His presence boosted the morale of the protesters and added political weight to their demands.

Growing Pressure on the Government

As the protest continued, pressure mounted on the authorities to respond. The meter readers made it clear that they seek dialogue, not confrontation. At the same time, they warned that ignoring the issue could lead to wider agitation. For now, all eyes remain on the government’s next move, as hundreds of families await a decision that could secure their future.
