For the first time, India has honoured a space mission hero with its highest peacetime military award. Gaganyaan astronaut and Indian Air Force Wing Commander Shubhanshu Shukla received the Ashoka Chakra during the Republic Day celebrations at Kartavya Path in New Delhi. President Droupadi Murmu presented the award in recognition of his exceptional courage and service beyond Earth.
Shukla earned the honour for his historic role in human spaceflight rather than battlefield combat. Traditionally, the Ashoka Chakra recognises acts of bravery during counter-terror operations or extraordinary military missions. However, the government acknowledged Shukla’s courage, discipline, and risk-taking during high-stakes space operations, marking a rare and significant departure from convention.
Historic ISS Mission Brings National Honour
In June last year, Shubhanshu Shukla created history by becoming the first Indian to enter the International Space Station (ISS). He reached the orbiting laboratory as part of the Axiom-4 mission, where he spent nearly 18 days conducting critical scientific experiments. Throughout the mission, he operated in extreme conditions and demonstrated exceptional mental and physical endurance.
Moreover, Shukla played a key role as the mission pilot and successfully handled the complex docking process with the ISS. His calm execution under pressure impressed international space agencies and strengthened India’s standing in global space exploration.
Contribution to Gaganyaan Mission
In addition to his ISS achievements, Shukla conducted several experiments for ISRO, scheduled for analysis in June 2025. Scientists believe these findings will play a crucial role in India’s ambitious Gaganyaan human spaceflight programme. His work is expected to contribute directly to mission safety, astronaut training, and long-duration space research.
Nation Applauds a Space Pioneer
Following the announcement, political leaders, industry experts, and film personalities praised Shubhanshu Shukla’s achievement. Many described the honour as a proud moment for India’s defence and space sectors. His journey reflects how courage now extends beyond borders and even beyond the planet.
With this recognition, India has sent a clear message that bravery in space exploration stands equal to heroism on the battlefield.
