A major anti-corruption drive in Bengaluru has put the spotlight back on police accountability. Lokayukta officials arrested a city police inspector red-handed while he was accepting a bribe of ₹4 lakh from a builder. The operation unfolded swiftly and left little room for denial, as officials secured strong evidence at the spot.
The arrested officer has been identified as Govindaraju, who was serving as a local police inspector. The case has triggered intense public debate over the misuse of authority within the police system.
Bribe Demanded to Remove Name From Case
The builder had approached Lokayukta officials after the inspector allegedly demanded money to delete his name from a fraud investigation. The demand reportedly stood at ₹5 lakh. Earlier, the inspector had already collected ₹1 lakh as an advance.
However, instead of paying the remaining amount quietly, the builder chose to expose the demand. This decision set the stage for a carefully planned sting operation.
Sting Operation Near Police Ground
Lokayukta officers prepared marked currency and monitored the exchange closely. The trap was laid near a police ground in Bengaluru. As soon as Govindaraju accepted ₹4 lakh in cash, officials moved in and caught him on the spot.
Investigators also secured audio evidence linked to the demand, strengthening the case. The recovery of marked notes further sealed the proof against the officer.
Charges Under the Prevention of Corruption Act
Following the arrest, Lokayukta police booked the inspector under the provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Officials have begun a deeper probe to check whether similar complaints exist against him.
Meanwhile, the police department is expected to initiate internal action as the legal process continues.
Public Reaction and Trust Concerns
This incident has raised fresh concerns about integrity within law enforcement. Many citizens have expressed anger, while others have called for stricter monitoring and faster punishment in corruption cases.
At the same time, the swift action by Lokayukta officials has drawn praise, reinforcing confidence that accountability mechanisms still work when citizens come forward.
As the investigation progresses, all eyes remain on the outcome of the case and the message it sends across the system.
The Lokayukta police on Wednesday trapped an inspector attached to the K.P. Agrahara police station in #Bengaluru while he was allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹4 lakh in connection with a chit fund-related case.
