Former Andhra Pradesh minister and YSR Congress Party leader Ambati Rambabu was sent to judicial remand for 14 days by a Guntur court. Police later shifted him under tight security to Rajamahendravaram Central Jail. The court order followed a detailed hearing on multiple cases registered against him.
Arrest Linked to Remarks and Police Obstruction Cases
Police arrested Ambati Rambabu in cases linked to alleged offensive remarks against Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and the public. Authorities also accused him of obstructing police duties. After the arrest, the police produced him before the Guntur Special Mobile Court.
Special Mobile Court Magistrate Sravanthi examined the case records and heard arguments from both sides. The court then ordered judicial remand until February 13. Rambabu requested a transfer to the Rajamahendravaram jail, and the magistrate approved the request.
Prosecution Seeks Remand Over Law and Order Concerns
Senior public prosecutors argued that Rambabu’s statements disturbed public peace. They said his actions interfered with police duties and damaged law and order. Police lawyers told the court that 16 cases were registered against him across the state.
The prosecution claimed Rambabu made deliberate personal remarks against the Chief Minister. They warned that his release could trigger law and order problems. Police also showed a video of his remarks to the magistrate to support their arguments.
Defence Denies Charges, Cites Age and Background
Senior advocate Ponnavolu Sudhakar Reddy appeared for Ambati Rambabu and denied all allegations. He claimed the government installed flex banners to provoke unrest. He said Rambabu only asked officials to remove those banners.
The defence stressed that the alleged offences carried a punishment of less than seven years. The lawyer urged the court to avoid remand. He also highlighted Rambabu’s age of 68 and his long public career as a lawyer, minister, and MLA.
Rambabu Alleges Police Pressure During Hearing
Addressing the court, Ambati Rambabu alleged that police assaulted him during custody. He claimed officers admitted to acting under government pressure. The magistrate recorded his statement as part of the proceedings.
After reviewing all arguments, the court confirmed judicial remand until February 13. Police then shifted Ambati Rambabu to Rajamahendravaram Central Jail under escort, closing a high-profile hearing that has drawn strong political attention across Andhra Pradesh.
