The Andhra Pradesh Medical Council (APMC) elections witnessed remarkable participation on Monday, with 30,773 doctors casting their votes. Election officer Chakradhar Babu highlighted that this is the first election in 20 years, making the turnout highly significant.
Voting Process and Turnout
Polling started at 8:00 AM and was initially scheduled to end by 5:00 PM. However, technical glitches extended the voting period until 8:00 PM. This extension allowed more doctors to exercise their rights. Out of approximately 56,000 registered doctors, over half participated. Babu emphasised that such engagement strengthens professional governance and accountability.
High Participation Marks a Milestone
The turnout reflects doctors’ commitment to shaping council policies and decisions. For many, this election provides a voice in the executive committee, which guides ethical standards, professional regulations, and continuing education programs across Andhra Pradesh. According to officials, the strong participation sets a new benchmark for future elections.
Certificates for Elected Members
Thirteen doctors won seats in the APMC executive committee. Officials handed over certificates to those present. The remaining members will receive theirs via post. Registrar Chakradhar Babu confirmed that all formalities are progressing smoothly, ensuring the elected members can start their roles without delay.
Impact on the Medical Community
These elections directly influence medical policy and governance in the state. By participating, doctors help ensure transparency and accountability. Experts note that the newly elected members will focus on improving healthcare quality, enforcing professional ethics, and supporting initiatives that benefit both practitioners and patients.
Looking Ahead
The APMC now has a fully formed executive committee ready to take action. With the doctors’ strong involvement, the council aims to implement reforms efficiently and foster closer collaboration with healthcare professionals. Officials hope that such engagement becomes a regular feature of council elections.
