Political parties in Telangana are stepping up efforts to win the remaining municipal chairman posts. To reach the required “magic figure,” they are actively courting independent councillors. In Kagaznagar, tension is rising over the chairman and vice-chairman seats. Reports suggest an understanding: Congress may take the chairman seat, while the BJP secures the vice-chairman post.
Today, elections for chairman and vice-chairman will be held in Thorrur, Jangaon, and Dornakal municipalities in the united Warangal district. After yesterday’s clashes, police deployed 500 personnel in Thorrur and conducted flag marches. They warned residents not to gather in groups. Former minister and BRS leader Satyavati Rathod attempted to join a protest called by her party, but police placed her under house arrest.
In Mancherial, authorities set up heavy security at the Kyatanpalli municipality due to yesterday’s unrest. Police monitored key points and told unauthorised people to stay away from the municipal office.
In Zaheerabad municipality, the chairman race is tense. Out of 37 wards, BRS won 15 seats, Congress 14, BJP 2, AIMIM 2, and independents 3. With local MLA Manik Rao (BRS) and MP Suresh Shetkar (Congress) as ex officio members, BRS needs support from two councillors and Congress from three to reach the magic figure. Independent, BJP, and AIMIM councillors now play a crucial role. BRS is planning to win the chairman seat with independent support, while Congress is trying to sway independents to its side.
