Telugu film actor Sivaji appeared before the Telangana State Women’s Commission on Saturday in connection with controversial remarks he made about women. The commission had earlier issued notices to the actor after taking suo motu cognisance of his comments.
The controversy arose during a recent promotional event for the film ‘Dandora’, where Sivaji made remarks about the dressing of heroines. His comments triggered widespread criticism on social media and among women’s rights groups, who alleged that the statements were disrespectful and undermined women’s dignity.
Commission Takes Suo Motu Action
Taking the issue seriously, the Telangana Women’s Commission registered the matter as a suo motu case. After a preliminary review, the commission concluded that Sivaji’s remarks appeared objectionable and potentially offensive towards women. Based on these findings, the commission issued formal notices, directing him to appear for an inquiry.
Officials stated that the commission aims to ensure accountability and promote respect towards women in public discourse, especially from public figures with significant influence.
Actor Complies With Notice
Following the commission’s directive, Sivaji personally appeared before the panel on January 27. During the hearing, the commission questioned him regarding the intent and context of his remarks made at the film event.
Sources said the commission is examining whether the comments violated norms related to women’s dignity and public responsibility. Authorities also indicated that the inquiry would not end with the issuance of notices alone.
Further Inquiry Likely
According to officials, the commission plans to conduct a detailed investigation into the matter. Depending on the findings, it may issue recommendations or take further action as permitted under the law.
The case has once again sparked debate on the responsibility of celebrities while speaking at public platforms. Women’s groups have reiterated the need for sensitivity and respectful language when addressing issues related to women.
The Telangana Women’s Commission stated that it remains committed to protecting women’s rights and ensuring that public statements do not promote disrespect or discrimination.
