Another Malaysia-linked aircraft has gone missing, raising fresh concerns about aviation safety in Southeast Asia. An ATR 42-500 turboprop aircraft, carrying 11 people, vanished over a mountainous region between Indonesia’s Java and Sulawesi islands. Authorities have launched an intensive search and rescue operation.
The aircraft, operated by Indonesia Air Transport, lost contact with air traffic control near Maros district in South Sulawesi. Officials confirmed that the plane disappeared from radar on yesterday afternoon while flying through difficult terrain.
Last Contact Near Maros
Air traffic control officials said they last tracked the aircraft at 1:17 pm near the Liang-Liang area of Maros. The region is known for steep hills and dense forests. Shortly before the disappearance, controllers advised the pilots to adjust their approach alignment while heading towards Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport.
However, minutes later, radio communication broke down completely. As a result, air traffic controllers declared an emergency and alerted rescue agencies.
Rescue Operation Intensifies
Meanwhile, Indonesian Air Force helicopters, drones, and ground teams began a large-scale search. Rescue teams are combing Mount Bulusaraung and nearby forest zones. The rough terrain and limited visibility have slowed progress.
At the same time, hikers in the area reported spotting scattered debris and markings similar to an airline logo. They also noticed small flames on the mountain slopes. Based on these inputs, rescue teams rushed to the reported locations.
Officials Among Passengers
Authorities confirmed that the aircraft carried eight crew members and three passengers. The passengers were officials from Indonesia’s Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, travelling on official duty.
ATR spokesperson Enda Purnama Sari said air traffic controllers followed emergency procedures immediately after losing contact. She added that teams are working round the clock to locate the aircraft.
Region Watches Closely
Malaysia-linked flight incidents have occurred before, keeping public concern high. This latest air plane missing case has once again drawn attention to flight safety in the region.
Rescue teams continue their efforts despite harsh terrain and weather. Authorities have assured families that they are using all available resources to trace the missing aircraft.
