Sri Lankan cricket has suffered a heartbreaking loss. Young cricketer Akshu Fernando, who had been in a coma for nearly seven years following a tragic train accident, passed away on Tuesday. He was just 25 years old.
Tragic Accident Near Mount Lavinia
The unfortunate incident occurred on December 28, 2018, near Mount Lavinia Beach. Akshu Fernando was returning after a running practice when a train hit him while he was crossing an unguarded railway track. As a result, he suffered severe head injuries and multiple fractures.
Following the accident, Fernando slipped into a coma and remained on life support for several years. Despite continuous medical care and tireless efforts by his family, he could not recover.
A Promising Cricket Career Cut Short
Akshu Fernando was considered one of Sri Lanka’s most promising young cricketers. He represented the country in the 2010 ICC Under-19 World Cup held in New Zealand. Notably, he scored a crucial 52 runs in the semi-final against Australia, showcasing his talent on the big stage.
Moreover, just two weeks before the accident, on December 14, 2018, Fernando scored an unbeaten 102 runs for Moores Sports Club in a domestic match. Many believed he was on the path to higher honours in international cricket.

Well-known commentator Roshan Abeysinghe expressed deep sorrow over Fernando’s death. He said the cricketing world had lost a talented player and a kind human being. Fans and former teammates also shared emotional messages on social media.
