Delhi: Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced a groundbreaking initiative, the “America-India Connect” (AIC) project, at the AI Impact Summit 2026. The $15 billion (approximately ₹1.25 lakh crore) project aims to transform internet connectivity between India and the United States.
The AIC project will create a new subsea cable network, strengthening digital ties and boosting data speeds for millions of users in India. While Mumbai and Chennai have long served as India’s primary internet hubs, the project will establish Visakhapatnam (Vizag) as a critical third hub for global connectivity.
Vizag Becomes a Strategic Hub
With this development, Vizag will serve as a strategic landing point for international internet traffic. This new hub will reduce the load on Mumbai and Chennai, provide backup routes in case of technical failures, and ensure faster, more reliable connections for data-intensive applications like gaming and AI platforms.
Expanding Global Connectivity
The AIC network will link Vizag with three major routes:
Vizag to Singapore: Connecting further to the U.S. West Coast via Australia.
Vizag to Chennai: Providing a route to the U.S. East Coast through South Africa.
Vizag to Australia: Enhancing internet connectivity across the Southern Hemisphere.
Advanced Technological Infrastructure
Subsea cables are fibre optic lines laid on the ocean floor, transmitting around 99% of global internet traffic. These cables use laser light to carry data through extremely thin optical fibres. Multiple protective layers of steel, copper, and plastic ensure durability in deep-sea conditions, guaranteeing secure and efficient transmission.
Benefits for India
The AIC project will significantly reduce latency, improve high-speed internet performance, and strengthen cloud and AI-based applications. With over 100 crore internet users in India, the enhanced infrastructure is expected to support future growth in digital services, AI training, and global business operations.
National and Global Significance
Experts believe this project positions India as a global digital leader and enhances the country’s strategic digital partnership with the United States. By establishing Vizag as a new hub, India not only diversifies its internet infrastructure but also ensures resilience and reliability for future technological demands.
