Amaravati: The Andhra Pradesh Assembly discussed controlling false information and harmful content on social media. MLA Gouthu Sireesha raised questions about the state’s approach to monitoring online content. Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha provided detailed responses.
Minister Anitha said the government formed a cabinet subcommittee to tackle misinformation and offensive posts on social media. The subcommittee has met twice to plan strategies. It studied measures implemented in other states like Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The goal is to identify actions that can work effectively in Andhra Pradesh.
She stressed that the government is taking strict action against posts spreading hatred or abusive content. In the past 20 months, officials registered 1,384 cases related to social media violations. They also arrested 1,067 individuals and presented them in court.
To strengthen enforcement, the government is drafting a new law to curb false information online. Minister Anitha added that officials are considering rules to limit social media use among school students to prevent misuse.
The discussion highlighted the government’s commitment to ensuring responsible social media use while protecting citizens from misinformation and harmful content.
