Coal Mining Set to Begin in Eluru District
Andhra Pradesh is preparing to enter India’s coal production map with the discovery of massive coal reserves. The state plans to begin coal mining in the Recharla block of Chintalapudi mandal in Eluru district. As a result, the project could transform the state’s long-term energy outlook.
Reliance Industries and Hyderabad-based Axis Energy Ventures India have submitted bids for coal extraction and gasification in the Recharla block. Notably, their interest reflects growing confidence in Andhra Pradesh’s coal potential.
Centre Invites Bids for Coal Blocks
In October, the Central Government invited bids for production and gasification across 41 coal blocks nationwide. Consequently, Reliance and Axis Energy jointly submitted bids for 17 blocks. Among them, the Recharla block in Andhra Pradesh gained special attention.
Recharla Block Holds Strategic Value
Experts estimate that the Recharla block contains high-quality Grade-1 coal reserves. Moreover, preliminary studies suggest the presence of nearly 200 to 300 crore tonnes of coal. Because of this, the block can support the generation of about 8,000 megawatts of power every year.
Importantly, these reserves could sustain electricity production for nearly 60 years. Therefore, once mining begins, the project can play a vital role in meeting Andhra Pradesh’s future energy needs. In addition, it may strengthen the state’s position in India’s energy sector.
