Kandula Durgesh has announced a series of major tourism approvals aimed at accelerating economic growth across Andhra Pradesh. The state Cabinet has cleared new and expansion projects in Visakhapatnam, Tirupati, and Kakinada. In addition, fresh tourism initiatives will roll out in the Sri Sathya Sai district, Chirala, and Rajahmundry. With these approvals, the government signals a strong push to convert natural and heritage assets into sustainable revenue generators.
Tourism plays a vital role in shaping a region’s economic progress. Therefore, the government has decided to develop scenic locations and historic structures into world-class destinations. Officials believe this approach will increase employment, attract private investment, and strengthen local businesses.
Visakhapatnam as an International Tourism Hub
The minister said the government is developing Visakhapatnam under a hub-and-spoke model to elevate it to international standards. Plans include seaplane services, cruise tourism circuits, and heli-tourism. Moreover, the city will emerge as an adventure and anchor tourism hub.
To support this transformation, the government has signed 50 MOUs worth ₹8,650 crore for projects around Visakhapatnam. However, Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) norms remain a hurdle for certain beachfront developments. As a result, the state has approached the Centre seeking relaxations. If the CRZ 19 norms come into force, officials expect faster execution of pending projects.
Temple and Eco-Tourism Boost
The government has sanctioned ₹54.04 crore for development works at Simhachalam Temple. Additionally, under Swadesh Darshan 2.0, ₹28.87 crore has been allocated for upgrading facilities at Borra Caves. These investments aim to improve visitor experience while preserving heritage value.
Furthermore, adventure tourism will expand across Rushikonda, Thimmapuram, Sagar Nagar Beach, and Gosthani backwaters. The department plans to introduce 10 types of water sports, including scuba diving and paramotoring. Meanwhile, the popular hop-on, hop-off double-decker bus service in Visakhapatnam continues to draw positive response from tourists.
Homestay Policy and Future Vision
The minister revealed that 490 homestays have been registered under the Home Stay and Bread and Breakfast policies. This initiative encourages local participation in tourism while providing affordable accommodation options.
Finally, the coalition government aims to develop Visakhapatnam, Amaravati, and Tirupati as leading tourism hubs. With strategic investments and policy support, Andhra Pradesh is positioning itself as a competitive tourism destination in India.
