Bangladesh–Pakistan defence ties gain momentum
Strategic developments in South Asia are changing rapidly. Bangladesh is reportedly planning to buy JF-17 Thunder fighter jets from Pakistan. This potential deal highlights a noticeable shift in Dhaka’s defence and foreign policy priorities.
According to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), talks have already taken place between the two countries on the sale of fighter aircraft. The announcement has sparked wide interest across the region.
What is the JF-17 Thunder?
The JF-17 Thunder is a multi-role fighter jet jointly developed by China and Pakistan. It offers modern avionics, advanced weapons capability, and lower operating costs. Because of these features, several countries view it as a cost-effective option to strengthen air power.
Bangladesh is looking to modernise its air force. Therefore, the JF-17 has emerged as a strong contender to meet its operational needs.
High-level talks between air force chiefs
Recently, Bangladesh Air Chief Marshal Hassan Mahmood Khan met Pakistan Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu in Islamabad. During the meeting, both sides discussed ways to deepen operational cooperation. They also focused on improving institutional coordination between the two air forces.
In addition, the leaders agreed to expand collaboration in training and capacity building. Pakistan has offered to train Bangladesh Air Force personnel to enhance combat readiness and technical skills.
Political backdrop behind the move
This development comes amid political changes in Bangladesh. After the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government, the interim administration led by Mohammad Yunus has begun reassessing foreign and defence policies. As a result, analysts believe Bangladesh is gradually reducing its dependence on India while strengthening ties with Pakistan.
Regional impact and next steps
If the fighter jet deal moves forward, it could influence the strategic balance in South Asia. However, Bangladeshi officials have not yet issued an official confirmation. Until then, discussions remain at the consultation stage.
Still, the reported talks signal Bangladesh’s intent to diversify defence procurement and modernise its military capabilities. The coming months will reveal whether this proposed deal turns into a formal agreement.
