Tensions rise after killing of student leader Sharif Osman Bin Hadi

Political tensions continue to escalate in Bangladesh following the killing of student leader and Inqilab Mancha activist Sharif Osman Bin Hadi. In response, the protest group has sharply criticised the interim government and issued a series of strong demands, including the cancellation of work permits held by Indian nationals in Bangladesh.

Inqilab Mancha issues ultimatum to interim government

In a statement posted on its official Facebook page, Inqilab Mancha demanded justice for Sharif Osman Bin Hadi. The group urged the government to arrest all accused persons and their alleged collaborators within 24 hours. At the same time, it called on the Yunus-led interim government to revoke work permits granted to Indians living and working in Bangladesh.

Additionally, the group warned that if India refuses to extradite former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh should approach the International Court of Justice. Notably, Inqilab Mancha also announced plans for large-scale protests on Monday, intensifying concerns over public order.

Background of the killing

Sharif Osman Bin Hadi, a 32-year-old activist known for his anti-India stance, was shot in Dhaka on December 12. Following the attack, authorities shifted him to Singapore for advanced treatment. However, he succumbed to his injuries on December 18.

Soon after news of his death broke, protests erupted across Bangladesh. Demonstrators targeted media offices and Awami League party offices, further escalating tensions.

India rejects allegations

Meanwhile, sections of the Bangladeshi media reported that two suspects involved in the killing had fled to India. In response, India strongly rejected these allegations, calling them baseless and misleading.

Situation remains tense

As protests continue, security agencies remain on high alert across several regions. Observers warn that the latest demands could further strain India–Bangladesh relations, especially amid an already volatile political environment.

Authorities are yet to respond officially to Inqilab Mancha’s ultimatum, even as the situation remains tense.
