Bangladesh witnessed fresh outbreaks of violence and unrest following the death of young protest leader Sharif Osman Hadi, a key representative of the Inquilab Mancha movement. The news of his death triggered widespread protests across the country, plunging several areas into chaos overnight.
Osman Hadi played a crucial role in the recent nationwide public movement. After confirmation of his death, angry protesters took to the streets in large numbers. Demonstrators set fire to offices of the Awami League, the party linked to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. In addition, mobs attacked offices of prominent media organisations, escalating tensions further.
According to reports, unidentified assailants shot Osman Hadi on December 12 in Dhaka’s Paltan area. The bullet caused severe head injuries. Doctors initially treated him in Dhaka and later shifted him to Singapore for advanced medical care. Despite intensive treatment, he succumbed to his injuries on Thursday night.
As news of his death spread, thousands of students and supporters gathered at Shahbagh Square in Dhaka. They raised slogans and demanded justice, blaming the authorities for failing to protect protest leaders. The demonstrations soon turned violent, forcing security agencies to remain on high alert.
The renewed unrest has raised serious concerns about law and order in Bangladesh. With political tensions already high, the latest violence signals a volatile phase for the country, as authorities struggle to contain protests and prevent further escalation.
