A simple farming decision taken in 2007 has transformed livelihoods in North Dinajpur, West Bengal. By choosing bay leaf cultivation over traditional crops, farmer Sukumar Barman created a sustainable income model that now supports thousands of families and empowers women across the region.
Sukumar planted bay leaf saplings on his land when most farmers hesitated to move away from rice and seasonal crops. His decision proved visionary. Bay leaf trees grow steadily, need limited maintenance, and continue producing for more than two decades. Today, that single choice stands as a powerful example of long-term farming success.
Bay leaf farming has grown into a major economic driver in North Dinajpur. The sector now generates nearly ₹400 crore every year. More than 10,000 people depend on it for daily work, with women forming the backbone of the workforce. They handle sorting, drying, and packaging, earning steady wages close to home.
For many women, this work offers more than income. It brings dignity, skill recognition, and financial independence. Local families say bay leaf processing has reduced migration and strengthened rural households.
Sukumar himself manages around 650 bay leaf trees. From this, he harvests nearly 80 to 90 quintals of leaves each year. Every three years, his earnings reach close to ₹5 lakh. The trees continue to produce year after year, making the crop reliable and low-risk.
Over time, other farmers followed his path. What began as a personal experiment has now become a regional movement. Agricultural experts say bay leaf farming suits small farmers because it provides long-term returns without heavy investment.
In North Dinajpur, bay leaves are no longer seen as just a kitchen spice. For thousands of families, they represent stable income, community strength, and hope that will last for generations.
