The cyclonic system over the Bay of Bengal is gradually weakening, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Yesterday, it turned into a cyclonic circulation and crossed the coast near Mullaittivu, northeast of Sri Lanka, in the evening.
The cyclonic circulation, which is centered 30 km from Mullaittivu, 70 km from Jaffna, 90 km from Mannar, 190 km from Karaikal and 400 km from Chennai, is likely to move westwards and weaken into a severe depression today, the IMD estimated.
The Amaravati Meteorological Centre has issued a rainfall update for Andhra Pradesh. It predicted light to moderate rains in some parts of the south coastal districts and Rayalaseema today. Officials advised people to remain alert, especially in low-lying areas.
Meanwhile, the IMD warned of heavy rainfall in a few parts of Tamil Nadu due to the cyclonic circulation. Gusty winds may also affect coastal regions for a short period.
Weather authorities stated that the impact would gradually reduce as the system weakens. However, they urged residents to follow official advisories and take necessary precautions until conditions fully stabilize.
