A shocking revelation has emerged in the Bengaluru techie death case, which police earlier treated as an accident. Investigators have now confirmed that the 34-year-old woman was murdered after resisting an attempted sexual assault.
Accidental Death Theory Ruled Out
The victim, Sharmila DK (34), worked with Accenture and lived in Subrahmanya Layout, Ramamurthy Nagar. On January 3, neighbours noticed smoke coming from her house and alerted authorities. Initially, police suspected suffocation due to a short circuit or fire.
As a result, officials registered a suspicious death case under Section 194(3)(iv) and began an investigation.
Police Uncover Brutal Murder
However, further investigation revealed disturbing facts. Police used technical evidence and forensic analysis to uncover the truth. An 18-year-old youth, identified as Karnal Kurai, murdered Sharmila after she resisted his sexual assault attempt.
Notably, the accused lived next door to the victim’s house.
Crime Took Place When Victim Was Alone
Sharmila lived with a friend, but she was alone that night. Her roommate had gone to her village on vacation. Taking advantage of the situation, the accused entered the house through a sliding window around 9 pm.
According to police, he tried to sexually assault her. When she resisted, he attacked her violently.
Attempt to Destroy Evidence
During the struggle, the accused hit her face and forcibly closed her mouth and nose. As a result, she lost consciousness and later died. After committing the crime, he burned her clothes and belongings on the bed to destroy evidence.
He also stole her mobile phone before fleeing the scene.
Accused Confesses During Interrogation
Police later identified the accused using scientific methods and local intelligence. During interrogation, Karnal Kurai confessed to the crime. He admitted entering the house, attempting assault, and killing the victim when she resisted.
Following the confession, police arrested him immediately.
Case Registered Under Multiple IPC Sections
Authorities registered a case under IPC Sections 103(1) (murder), 64(2) and 66, and 238 (destruction of evidence). Police confirmed that further investigation is underway.

This case has raised serious concerns about women’s safety in Bengaluru, especially in residential localities. Once again, the incident highlights the urgent need for vigilance, security, and strict punishment for such crimes.
Police assured that they will ensure swift justice for the victim.
