A shocking cyber fraud case has surfaced in Bengaluru, where an engineering student from a reputed college allegedly became entangled in a ₹7 crore scam after sharing his bank account details with a friend. What began as an act of trust has now turned into a serious criminal investigation.

According to police sources, the student had known the accused, identified as Ayush, for nearly a year. In November, Ayush reportedly told him that his own bank account had been blocked. He then requested temporary access to the student’s account, claiming he needed it for “emergency transactions.”

A Decision That Changed Everything

Trusting his friend, the student agreed without suspecting any wrongdoing. He shared complete access to his account at Karnataka Gramin Bank, including his Net Banking user ID and password.

However, the situation worsened when he went a step further. He couriered the Airtel SIM card linked to his bank account, along with his ATM card, to Ayush. By doing so, he effectively handed over full control of his financial identity.

At the time, the student believed he was simply helping a friend in need. Unfortunately, that decision would soon come back to haunt him.

Fraud Worth ₹7 Crore Exposed

Months later, the bank contacted the student regarding suspicious transactions running into ₹7 crore. The scale of the amount left him stunned. After internal checks, authorities discovered that the money flowing through his account was linked to multiple cybercrime activities.

Investigators suspect that the account was used as a mule account to route illegally obtained funds. In cyber fraud operations, scammers often use third-party accounts to hide the origin of stolen money.

Realising the seriousness of the matter, the student approached the cybercrime authorities and filed a complaint.

Police Investigation Underway

The Bengaluru North Division Cyber Crime Police have registered a case against Ayush and others believed to be involved in the network. Officials are now tracing digital footprints, financial trails, and communication records to uncover the full extent of the fraud.

Meanwhile, investigators are also examining how the account was used and whether the student had any knowledge of the illegal transactions. Although he claims innocence, authorities will determine legal responsibility based on evidence.

A Strong Warning for Everyone

This case serves as a powerful reminder about digital safety. Sharing bank details, passwords, OTPs, ATM cards, or SIM cards is not just risky — it can have serious legal consequences.

Importantly, the primary account holder remains legally responsible for any activity conducted through their account. Even if the person did not directly commit the crime, negligence in safeguarding banking credentials can lead to criminal charges.

In today’s digital world, financial fraud has become increasingly sophisticated. Therefore, experts strongly advise individuals to:

  • Never share bank login credentials with anyone.

  • Avoid giving access to SIM cards linked to bank accounts.

  • Immediately report suspicious account activity.

  • Enable multi-factor authentication and alerts.

What seemed like a small favour between friends has now turned into a multi-crore legal battle. The incident stands as a cautionary tale — trust is valuable, but when it comes to banking security, vigilance must come first.
