A dangerous and drug-resistant fungus, Candida auris, is spreading rapidly across the world and has become a major global health threat, according to a recent scientific study. Researchers warn that the infection is now deadlier than ever, even with treatment.

Indian-US Study Raises Serious Concern

The alarming findings come from a joint study conducted by the Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute, Delhi, and the US National Institutes of Health (NIH). The researchers revealed that Candida auris infections affect nearly 6.5 million people worldwide every year.

More worryingly, the death rate exceeds 50 percent, despite the use of antifungal medicines. Doctors say this high mortality is mainly due to the fungus’s strong resistance to multiple drugs.

Spreads Easily and Stays on Skin

Experts explained that Candida auris can survive on human skin for long periods. From there, it can spread to other body parts or infect other people. In addition, the fungus can cling to hospital surfaces and medical equipment, increasing the risk of outbreaks in healthcare settings.

According to a report published in the journal Microbiology and Molecular Biology Reviews, the fungus survives by changing its structure, forming cell clusters, and sticking firmly to surfaces. These features make it extremely difficult to eliminate.

Hard to Detect, Delays Treatment

Another major challenge is diagnosis. Researchers noted that routine laboratory tests often fail to detect Candida auris. In many cases, it is mistaken for other common yeast infections, which delays proper treatment and increases the risk of death.

Urgent Need for New Solutions

Health experts stressed the urgent need for new antifungal drugs, improved diagnostic tools, and effective vaccines to control the spread of this deadly fungus. Without stronger measures, Candida auris could pose a serious threat to global public health in the coming years.
