As the New Year approaches, cyber criminals have stepped up online fraud attempts using new and deceptive methods. In response, police officials across Kurnool district have intensified awareness programmes to prevent the public from falling prey to such scams.
According to the police, fraudsters are targeting people by sending fake links claiming to offer free New Year gifts, heavy discounts on branded products, and lottery winnings linked to mobile numbers. In several cases, criminals have also created fake websites in the names of well-known companies to gain public trust and steal money.
₹35.50 Lakh Lost in Major Cyber Scam
In a recent incident, a resident of Krishnagiri mandal suffered a massive financial loss after cyber criminals posed as representatives of the Meesho shopping platform. The fraudsters informed the victim that he had won a first prize worth ₹15.51 lakh. To claim the reward, they asked him to transfer ₹15,510 as a processing fee via PhonePe.
Trusting their claims, the victim made the payment. Later, the scammers continued to extract money in stages, ultimately siphoning off ₹35.50 lakh from his bank account. Police investigations revealed that the accused operated from West Bengal.
Police Advisory for Online Shoppers
With online shopping activity increasing during the festive season, police officials have urged citizens to remain extra cautious. They advised people not to click on unknown or suspicious links sent via messages or social media. Officials also warned against sharing bank details, OTPs, or personal information with anyone claiming prize money or rewards.
The police further cautioned the public not to download APK files or install unknown applications, as these often provide remote access to fraudsters. Messages claiming gift cards, special offers, or prize claims should be treated with suspicion, officials said.
Dial 1930 for Immediate Help
Victims of cyber fraud should immediately report the incident by calling the national cybercrime helpline number 1930, police officials stressed. Quick reporting can help block fraudulent transactions and improve recovery chances.
District Superintendent of Police Vikrant Patil appealed to residents to stay alert and spread awareness among family members, especially senior citizens. He emphasized that public awareness remains the strongest weapon against cybercrime.
