Cyclone Ornab is rapidly advancing toward the Sri Lankan coast after intensifying over the southwest Bay of Bengal. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed that the system strengthened into a severe cyclonic storm and may intensify further today.
Cyclone Position and Movement
IMD officials stated that Cyclone Ornab is currently located about 250 km from Pottuvil in Sri Lanka and nearly 940 km from Chennai. The system is moving northwest at a steady pace. Meteorologists expect it to cross the Sri Lankan coast between Pottuvil and Trincomalee on Friday night.
Heavy Rainfall Alert in Tamil Nadu and Kerala
Due to the cyclone’s movement, Tamil Nadu and Kerala are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall on Friday and Saturday. Weather officials warned that intense showers may cause waterlogging in low-lying areas. Coastal residents have been advised to remain cautious.
Andhra Pradesh to See Rain and Falling Temperatures
The cyclone will also influence weather conditions in Andhra Pradesh. Light to moderate rainfall is expected in the south coastal and Rayalaseema regions. At the same time, cold conditions are increasing across the state. Cities such as Visakhapatnam, Kadapa, and Anantapur have already recorded a 2–3 degree Celsius drop in maximum temperatures.
Dense Fog Warning for North Coastal Districts
Meanwhile, the Amaravati Meteorological Centre issued a fog alert for several districts. Dense fog is likely over the next four days in Alluri Seetharama Raju, Parvathipuram Manyam, Vizianagaram, Eluru, and Ambedkar Konaseema districts. Authorities warned that reduced visibility could affect early morning travel.
Officials continue to monitor Cyclone Ornab closely and have urged people to follow weather advisories and take necessary safety measures.
