Court Delivers Clear 6–3 Majority Verdict
The US Supreme Court has dealt a major setback to former President Donald Trump by rejecting his decision to deploy National Guard troops in Illinois. The court delivered its verdict with a 6–3 majority and refused to lift the stay on the federal deployment.
Judges stated that the Trump administration failed to clearly explain the legal authority behind using military forces for law enforcement duties in the state.
How the Dispute Began
The issue started on October 4, when Trump ordered around 300 Illinois National Guard personnel into federal service. He sent the troops to provide security in the Chicago area. A day later, the administration also deployed members of the Texas National Guard to the city.
Soon after, legal challenges questioned the legality of the move. Both the district court and the appeals court blocked the deployment. The Supreme Court has now upheld those earlier decisions.
White House Response to the Verdict
White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson defended the former president’s decision. She said Trump acted to protect federal buildings, property, and officials from potential unrest.
However, the court did not accept the administration’s arguments and chose to maintain the restrictions on troop deployment.
Illinois Leaders Applaud the Decision
Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, who opposed the deployment from the start, welcomed the ruling. Chicago Mayor Bill Clinton also supported the verdict.
State leaders called the decision a “great victory for Illinois and American democracy.” They stressed that the ruling protects constitutional limits on federal power.

The verdict strengthens judicial oversight over the domestic use of military forces. It also marks an important legal defeat for Trump’s approach to handling internal security through federal troop deployment.
