Fire breaks out in B1 coach near Elamanchili station
A tragic fire broke out on the Tata–Ernakulam Express (Train No. 18189) around 1 am on Sunday, leading to the death of a passenger in an AC coach. The incident occurred while the train was approaching Elamanchili station in Andhra Pradesh, triggering panic among passengers.
Flames spread rapidly to adjacent coach
According to railway officials, the fire first erupted in the B1 AC coach, which was located next to the pantry car. Within minutes, the flames spread to the M2 coach. Before firefighters reached the spot, both coaches were completely gutted. Meanwhile, heavy smoke engulfed the area, including Elamanchili railway station.
Elderly passenger unable to escape
Anakapalle Superintendent of Police Tuhin Sinha inspected the accident site and confirmed that one passenger died in the incident. The deceased was a 71-year-old man who reportedly failed to escape due to his advanced age. Authorities have informed his relatives. Meanwhile, medical teams examined the surviving passengers as a precautionary measure.
Alert crew prevents major tragedy
Importantly, the alertness of the loco pilot and the TTE helped prevent a larger disaster. After the train experienced a brake jam near Elamanchili, the loco pilot noticed flames coming from a coach and immediately halted the train. As a result, crew members quickly alerted passengers and assisted them in evacuating.
Rescue operation carried out amid heavy smoke
Firefighters faced difficulties due to thick smoke and rapidly spreading flames. Rescue teams broke windows and helped passengers exit safely. Officials said flammable materials, including blankets and synthetic furnishings, caused the fire to spread quickly while passengers were asleep.
Investigation underway, passengers shifted
Railway authorities have launched a detailed investigation into the cause of the fire. Preliminary findings suggest a possible electrical panel malfunction in the B1 coach. Officials will confirm details after receiving the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) report.
Meanwhile, authorities arranged an alternate train to transport passengers to Ernakulam. Due to the incident, nearly 2,000 passengers were stranded at Elamanchili station for several hours.
