Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, showcased India’s first domestically produced 32-bit processor chip, presenting it to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This achievement represents a significant step forward in the nation’s ambition to become a global semiconductor hub, driven by the India Semiconductor Mission.

At the opening of Semicon India 2025, Vaishnaw highlighted the swift advancements in the sector, stating, “Currently, five semiconductor facilities are under construction, with one pilot production line already operational. We’ve just introduced India’s first homegrown chip to the Prime Minister. Two more units are set to start production soon, and designs for five additional facilities are moving forward steadily. The ecosystem for chip manufacturing is now firmly in place.”

He emphasized India’s role as a stable and reliable destination amid global uncertainties. “In a world facing policy instability and economic challenges, India shines as a pillar of growth and consistency. Our predictable policies make India an ideal investment destination,” Vaishnaw remarked.

Reflecting on the journey, he noted, “A few years back, we embarked on this mission under the Prime Minister’s visionary leadership. By assembling a team of global industry experts and maintaining a sharp focus on execution, we’ve transformed India’s semiconductor landscape in just over three years. Today, the world views India as a trusted partner in this field.”

Vaishnaw also invited international investors to capitalize on India’s growing semiconductor demand. “Over the past ten years, our electronics production has surged sixfold, and exports have grown eightfold. With the Make in India initiative fueling new manufacturing units across industries, semiconductor demand is increasing every quarter. Now is the time to invest in India,” he urged.

The minister underscored the robust foundation of this critical industry, supported by a transparent and expert-driven policy framework. “The India Semiconductor Mission operates with professionalism, covering key sectors like consumer electronics, automotive, defense, and power industries. Our decisions are informed by thorough analysis from semiconductor industry specialists,” he concluded.
