Heavy floods triggered by torrential rains have claimed at least 16 lives in Indonesia’s North Sulawesi province, officials confirmed on Monday. The sudden flash floods caused rivers to overflow in the early hours, leading to widespread destruction across several villages.
Rivers Overflow After Intense Rainfall
According to Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), continuous heavy rainfall led to rivers breaching their banks early Monday morning. As a result, fast-moving floodwaters swept through the Siawu Tagulandang Biaro (Sitaro) district, catching residents off guard while they were asleep.
Villages Inundated, Homes Damaged
Floodwaters carrying mud, rocks, and debris rushed into multiple villages, damaging houses and public infrastructure. Officials said more than 140 houses suffered damage due to the floods. In addition, roads and communication networks were badly affected, making rescue and relief operations more challenging.
Hundreds Moved to Relief Camps
Authorities shifted around 680 people to rehabilitation and relief centers as a precautionary measure. Emergency teams continue to provide food, drinking water, and medical assistance to the displaced families. However, damaged roads have slowed down relief efforts in some remote areas.
Emergency Declared in Sitaro District
To ensure faster assistance and coordinated relief work, the local administration imposed a 14-day state of emergency in the Sitaro district starting Monday. Officials said the emergency status will help mobilize resources, deploy additional rescue teams, and restore essential services quickly.
Rescue and Assessment Ongoing
Rescue teams are still searching affected areas, while officials assess the full extent of the damage. Authorities have urged residents living near rivers and hilly regions to remain alert, as more rainfall is expected in the coming days.
Indonesia frequently faces floods during the rainy season due to its tropical climate and geographical conditions. Officials have once again stressed the need for early warnings and disaster preparedness to reduce loss of life in such incidents.
