Senior IAS officer G. Sai Prasad will assume charge as the new Chief Secretary of Andhra Pradesh on Saturday at the AP Secretariat. The state government appointed him as the next Chief Secretary after extending the tenure of the current Chief Secretary, Vijayanand, until February 28. Sai Prasad will formally take charge at 11:33 a.m., marking a key administrative transition in the state government.
The government issued orders on November 29 through GO Rt No. 2230, extending Vijayanand’s tenure by three months and naming Sai Prasad as his successor. Until now, Sai Prasad has been serving as Special Chief Secretary of the Water Resources Department and also as Ex-Officio Special Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister.
A 1991 Batch IAS Officer with Vast Administrative Experience
Sai Prasad belongs to the 1991 batch of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and is from the Andhra Pradesh cadre. An M.Tech graduate, he was selected into the IAS on September 15, 1991.
He began his career as an Assistant Collector in Warangal from June 1992 to May 1993 in the then undivided Andhra Pradesh. He later served as Assistant Collector in Paderu between September 1993 and April 1995. From August 1995 to March 1997, he worked as Commissioner of the Guntur Municipal Corporation.
His administrative journey continued as Joint Collector of Kadapa from May 1997 to August 1998. He then served as District Collector of Kurnool from July 2000 to June 2003 and briefly as Collector of Chittoor district in 2003.
Key Roles in Power, Housing and Energy Sectors
Sai Prasad held several important positions in the power sector. He worked as Joint Managing Director of AP Transco from October 2003 to August 2004. He later served as Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of AP Eastern Power Distribution Company Limited and AP Central Power Distribution Company Limited between 2004 and 2010.
From February 2010 to October 2011, he served as Vice Chairman of the AP Housing Board.
Experience at the Centre and CM’s Office
He moved to the central government in October 2011 and worked as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Power until June 2014. After returning to the state, he served as Secretary to the Chief Minister from June 2014 to February 2016 and later as Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister until May 2019.
Between January 2020 and February 2022, he served as CMD of AP Solar Power Corporation Private Limited and as Ex-Officio Principal Secretary of the Energy Department.
He also worked as Chief Commissioner of Land Administration (CCLA) from February 2022 to June 2024. Since June 2024, he has been serving as Special Chief Secretary of the Water Resources Department. From January 2025, he has additionally held the charge of Ex-Officio Special Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister.
Administrative Transition
With decades of experience across district administration, power utilities, housing, land administration, and the Chief Minister’s Office, Sai Prasad steps into the role of Chief Secretary at a crucial time for Andhra Pradesh’s governance and development agenda.
