Team India lost the three-match ODI series against New Zealand 1–2 at home. The decisive third ODI in Indore ended in a 41-run defeat for India. Following the loss, criticism has mounted over India’s overall performance.
Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar shared his views after the match. He clearly stated that fielding lapses, not batting or bowling, led to India’s defeat.
Easy Singles Put Pressure on Bowlers
Gavaskar said New Zealand batters were allowed to take easy singles, especially in the middle overs. This lack of sharp fielding increased pressure on Indian bowlers. As a result, the bowlers struggled to control the run flow.
He added that India failed to stop quick singles. This allowed New Zealand to build partnerships without taking risks.
No Individual Names, But Clear Message
Gavaskar avoided naming specific players. However, he pointed out that players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are usually quick and alert on the field. He felt the overall fielding effort in this match was below expectations.
According to him, better fielding could have changed the match situation. Tight fielding would have restricted New Zealand’s scoring.
Mitchell and Phillips Make Full Use of Chances
New Zealand batters Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips benefited the most from India’s fielding errors. The pair added 219 runs for the third wicket. Their partnership played a major role in New Zealand posting a big total.
Because singles came easily, both batters stayed at the crease comfortably. They avoided risky shots and kept the scoreboard moving.
India Fall Short Despite Strong Batting
Chasing a target of 338 runs, India were bowled out for 296. Virat Kohli fought hard and scored a brilliant 124. Nitish Reddy contributed 53 runs, while Harshit Rana added a useful 52.
Despite these efforts, India could not cross the line.
Fielding a Major Concern Going Forward
Gavaskar stressed that modern ODI cricket demands top-class fielding. He warned that even strong batting performances may not be enough without sharp fielding.
As Team India prepares for upcoming series, improving fielding standards could be crucial to avoid similar defeats.
