Panaji, Goa: A major tragedy struck North Goa when a massive fire engulfed a popular nightclub in Arpora, claiming the lives of 25 people, including four tourists. The incident occurred shortly after midnight on Saturday at the “Birch by Romeo Lane” nightclub, located around 25 km from Panaji.
Initial investigations indicate that the fire was caused by a cooking gas cylinder explosion inside the kitchen. The sudden blast led to the flames spreading rapidly, trapping several staff members and visitors. Among the deceased were three women, all of whom worked in the kitchen. Officials also confirmed that three bodies were found completely charred.
Emergency Response and Investigation
Following reports of the explosion, firefighters and emergency response teams rushed to the scene. However, the intensity of the blaze made rescue operations extremely difficult.
Chief Minister Pramod Kumar Sawant, accompanied by local MLA Michael Lobo, inspected the accident site on Sunday morning. Expressing deep shock and grief, the Chief Minister offered condolences to the families of the victims.
Sawant confirmed that the government has taken the incident very seriously and assured a thorough investigation. He stated that early findings suggest the nightclub failed to comply with mandatory safety norms.
“We will take stringent action against all those responsible,” he said. “If negligence is established, legal action will be taken not only against the club owners but also against officials who approved its operations.”
Nightclub Background
Officials revealed that the nightclub, opened last year, had quickly become a popular social spot in the region. However, questions are now being raised about whether the establishment adhered to critical fire safety requirements, including proper emergency exits, fire suppression systems, and structural safety standards.
MLA Michael Lobo said the victims’ bodies had been recovered and moved to a nearby government hospital for post-mortem procedures. He also confirmed that authorities will soon conduct comprehensive inspections of all nightclubs in the area.
“Any establishment found operating without proper licenses or safety clearances will face immediate action,” Lobo added.
Government Response and Next Steps
The state government has announced a detailed probe to determine the exact cause of the explosion and identify any lapses. Officials are reviewing whether the club possessed valid fire safety certifications and operational permissions.
Calling the incident a “deeply unfortunate tragedy,” Chief Minister Sawant said the government would provide all necessary support to the affected families.
As the investigation progresses, the accident has renewed concerns over fire safety standards in Goa’s vibrant nightlife sector.
