The historic village of Lakkundi in Karnataka has turned into a major point of interest after workers unearthed a cache of gold ornaments during house construction. Following the discovery, the Karnataka government has ordered a full-scale excavation, triggering what officials describe as a systematic treasure hunt.
Recently, workers found a copper pot weighing 634 grams while digging a foundation in Lakkundi. Inside the pot, officials discovered 466 grams of gold ornaments, including bangles, chains, rings, and bracelets. Soon after the incident, authorities launched an investigation into the site’s historical significance.
As a result, officials began excavation work at the Kote Veerabhadreshwara Swamy Temple premises on Friday. To speed up operations, departments deployed JCBs, trucks, and tractors in large numbers. The Tourism Department, Archaeology Department, Lakkundi Heritage Development Authority, and district administration are jointly supervising the operation.
According to archaeology officials, Lakkundi once served as a prosperous center where gold coins were minted in ancient times. Therefore, experts believe the underground area may still hide valuable artifacts. The current excavation aims to identify and preserve any remaining historical wealth.
Interestingly, a 14-year-old boy named Prajwal Ritti first noticed the copper pot during construction at his house. He immediately informed his family, who then alerted government authorities. Their timely action helped preserve the discovery and bring it to official attention.
Historically, dynasties such as the Rashtrakutas and Chalukyas ruled Lakkundi. Because of this rich past, officials say finding hidden treasures in the region does not come as a surprise. Preliminary assessments suggest the recovered gold ornaments may be over 400 years old.
Meanwhile, authorities continue excavation under tight supervision, hoping the site may reveal more clues about Lakkundi’s glorious past.
