Uncertainty has grown among millions of immigrants after the Trump administration suspended the US Green Card Lottery program. The decision has shocked applicants who waited for years to secure permanent residency in the United States.
Homeland Security Secretary Christie Noem announced the move on X. She confirmed that the US Citizenship and Immigration Services ordered an immediate halt to the Diversity Visa Program. As a result, thousands of hopeful applicants now face an uncertain future.
Shooting Incident Triggered the Decision
The suspension followed a recent shooting at Brown University. The incident claimed two lives and left several others injured. According to the Trump administration, the accused Portuguese national entered the US through the Green Card Lottery.
Because of this, the government raised serious security concerns. Christie Noem stated that violent individuals must never gain entry into the country. Therefore, the administration decided to stop the lottery system.
What Is the Green Card Lottery?
The Diversity Visa Program, widely known as the Green Card Lottery, selects nearly 55,000 foreign nationals each year. The US State Department manages the program under the Immigration and Nationality Act. Its goal is to promote diversity in immigration.
A green card allows long-term residence and employment in the US. Moreover, holders can apply for American citizenship after six years. As a result, demand for the program remains extremely high.
Years of Waiting, Sudden Disappointment
Millions apply for the lottery every year. Even after selection, applicants often wait 10 to 20 years to receive a green card. Still, many see the lottery as their only legal path to settle in the US.
Now, the suspension has shattered those hopes. Thousands who already entered the system fear they may lose their chance entirely.
Program Not Completely Cancelled
However, the government has not abolished the Green Card system fully. Officials clarified that they only suspended the lottery process for now. At the same time, they have not explained how future green cards will be issued.
Until the administration provides clarity, uncertainty will continue. Meanwhile, the decision marks a major shift in US immigration policy and affects millions worldwide.
