The United States has intensified its debate over Greenland after a Republican lawmaker introduced a bill proposing the island’s merger with the US. Randy Fine tabled the draft legislation, titled “Greenland Integration and Statehood Bill,” claiming it would empower former President Donald Trump to pursue strategic action in the Arctic region.

Bill Aims to Counter Russia and China

According to Fine, the move seeks to prevent America’s rivals from expanding their influence in the Arctic. He argued that Russia and China are actively strengthening their presence in the region. Therefore, he said, the US must act decisively to protect its long-term security interests. The proposed bill frames Greenland as a critical geopolitical asset due to its location and resources.

Trump’s Renewed Focus on Greenland

Meanwhile, Donald Trump has once again drawn attention to Greenland. After recent global developments, Trump reportedly explored options to distance Greenland from Denmark. International media reports suggested that US officials even discussed offering financial incentives to Greenland’s residents. These proposals ranged from $10,000 to $100,000 per person to encourage closer ties with Washington.

In addition, Trump hinted that he would speak more openly about Greenland within the next few weeks. However, these remarks quickly sparked global reactions.

Greenland Rejects US Proposals

Greenland’s leadership firmly rejected the reported US plans. Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen stated that no foreign power has the right to decide Greenland’s future. He emphasized that the island’s people alone will shape their destiny. Moreover, several NATO countries expressed concern over the US approach, warning that it could destabilize regional relations.

Strategic Island at the Center of Debate

Greenland currently has a population of about 57,000. Despite its small size, the island holds major strategic importance in the Arctic. As global powers compete for influence, Greenland continues to stand at the center of a growing international debate.
