Amaravati: Andhra Pradesh’s coalition government has expressed a positive stance on granting pardons to prisoners and allocating prison funds, said State Home Minister Anita. She announced on the eighth day of the Assembly budget sessions on Monday.
Home Minister Introduces Prison Reform Bill
During the session, Home Minister Anita introduced a prison reform and amendments bill. She explained that the government is actively working to improve conditions and rehabilitation opportunities for inmates. She emphasised that the reforms align with the central government’s legislation.
Expanding Education and Rehabilitation
The minister stated that prisoners now receive better chances to study during their sentences. She also noted the government is implementing programs to enhance skills and mental development. Legal amendments are necessary to ensure lasting change in prison management.
Special Facilities for Women and Children
To support women inmates, the government is setting up dedicated Anganwadi centres for their children inside prisons. Minister Anita explained that inmates will be categorised based on criminal history and behaviour, which will help design personalised rehabilitation programs.
Open-Air Prisons and Skill Development
The minister announced plans to establish open-air prisons that promote behavioural transformation and mental growth. Prisoners will engage in agriculture and other vocational activities, preparing them for reintegration into society.
Commitment to Positive Change
Home Minister Anita stressed that the government aims to transform prisons from mere detention centres into rehabilitation hubs. She highlighted that education, vocational training, and mental support will help prisoners lead productive lives after release.
