The Delhi High Court has ruled that Saregama holds exclusive audio rights to 134 films composed by Ilaiyaraaja between 1976 and 2001. The verdict marks a major development in the long-running copyright dispute between the legendary composer and the audio company.
Court Clarifies Ownership of Music Rights
Justice Tushar Rao Gedela stated that Ilaiyaraaja does not own rights to these specific works. The court explained that he composed the songs while receiving payment from film producers. Therefore, the producers initially owned the rights. Later, they permanently assigned those rights to Saregama. As a result, Saregama now retains exclusive control over the audio content.
Dispute Over ‘Ep Iniya Pon Nilavey’
The conflict gained attention over the popular song ‘Ep Iniya Pon Nilavey.’ Ilaiyaraaja had granted permissions to digital platforms to use his music. However, Saregama challenged his authority, arguing that it owns the audio rights. Consequently, the matter reached the Delhi High Court.
Interim Setback, But Appeal Option Open
Although the ruling dealt a setback to Ilaiyaraaja, the court has allowed him to appeal the interim order. He can now challenge the decision before a higher bench. The next legal steps will determine the final outcome of this high-profile copyright case.
